Dear reader, we did it! We survived the long, wet winter months of lockdown, and for that I congratulate you. As the days lengthen, the weather warms up and the restrictions start to ease, I feel it’s time to reclaim our outdoors time as fun and joyous! So here are three of our BEST Spring-themed songs and conversation starters for you to enjoy with the children in your care. Play these songs and initiate these chats as you potter round the garden, picnic in the park or wander into the woods.

Jesus often used garden and agriculture analogies in his teaching, from roots to weeds, mustard seeds and fig trees, he found ways to teach us about his kingdom in the nature that’s all around us. Here I have suggested a song, a Bible verse and a simple conversation starter that you can use with children. All these songs are free to listen to on Spotify, or you can buy and download them from our Same Boat Music website.

  1. Spring Sprang!

    Listen to… Spring Sprang
Spring Sprang is a cheerful song heralding the arrival of spring, and calling us to join in the song that worships our Maker God; ‘nature joins together in a symphony of song’.

    Read… Psalm 148
Psalm 148 does the same, encouraging us to join in with the whole of creation to worship God together.

    Say something like…
“Did you know that all of creation sings its own song to God? When we hear the birds singing or the wind blowing through the trees, it can be a reminder that God is a powerful and wonderful creator. What kind of things do you imagine the birds, or the whales, or even the raindrops might be saying to God?” (Silly answers, as well as poetic ones, are very much encouraged!).

  2. In My Garden

    Listen to… In My Garden
In My Garden is a simple song about the process of planting, growing and then eating what’s been harvested!

    Read… John 15:1 and John 15:5.
Jesus tells us that he is the vine, we are the branches and God the Father is the gardener.

Say something like… Jesus said that he is the vine, we are the branches and God the Father is the gardener. A bit like the way that that tree branches are attached to the trunk, we are connected to Jesus and cared for by the ultimate gardener. How does it make you feel when you think about being connected to Jesus like this?

  3. The Seed Song

    Listen to… The Seed Song
A fun-filled favourite, this song reminds us that when we plant seeds of love, patience and friendship, that’s what will grow!

    Read… Matthew 13:31-32
Jesus teaches that the kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed - tiny when it’s planted but grows to become a very big tree.

    Say something like…
Just like tiny seeds grow into huge trees, Jesus said that God’s way of doing things will always grow, even when they start off very small. The small ways that you share His love today will spread and grow. What small way can we share God’s love with someone today?
